Experience Liberia
- Admire local and national Costa Rican art at the Guanacaste Museum
- Explore stunning national parks nearby like Santa Rosa
- Witness Costa Rica's unique sabanero cowboy culture and ranching operations
- Get close to wildlife like wild horses and oryx at Africa Mia, a natural private reserve
While Liberia might be viewed as simply a transit city for getting to Guanacaste's incredible beaches, the city itself is worth exploring. Known as the 'White City' for the whitewashed colonial homes and the white gravel that used to line Liberia's roads, this colonial heritage can be witnessed through historic buildings that still stand in the city. Liberia is also an excellent place to learn more about Costa Rica's fascinating sabanero cowboy culture as many of Guanacastecos raise cattle for a living. From Liberia, several national parks are within easy reach, like the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano National Park and its volcanic hot springs, serene waterfalls and rivers. For a true taste of Liberia, grab a Jugo de Caña (sugar cane juice) or Copo (snow cone) from street vendor and cool down from the Costa Rican heat just like the locals.
